The Mary Rigg & Village

The Gap and The Need

The world are getting smaller with the current US and world economy and having a global view is vital to children’s success when they grow up.  Most of the schools provide diversity and inclusion programs and prepare children well for a world stage.  At selected Indianapolis Public Schools and selected children population such as foster kids, students don’t have a lot of opportunity to travel to other states and other countries. The composition of the student body (majority African American and Hispanic) revealed that they don’t have peers that can showcase the Asian culture as well. There is an unmet need to bring diverse culture to these children and we would like to enhance their diversity awareness by bringing them out of their circle and introducing Chinese language and culture to them

The Project and The Solution

To assist with installing this global view for children who do not have a lot of opportunity in Indiana, we bring diversity and Chinese culture to them to create a new vision of the world, a place where both academic and cultural knowledge will allow them to be competitive when they grow up. The current and future programs include cultural lectures and interactive games in classrooms, field trips, summer camps and 1:1 tutoring. Through these programs, we hope to prepare children to understand and appreciate other cultures and be ready for the world stage when they become young adults.

What We Have Done

We have taught Chinese culture classes with interactive games to IPS students at Mary Rigg Neighborhood Center and foster care kids in the Villages.  We have also brought Chinese culture and interactive games to Indy500 Kids Day for the last three years and have attended multiple community cultural events. Through these activities, we introduced the Chinese culture to kids and communities that usually do not have an opportunity to visit China or learn about Chinese culture.

This is a new program stared in 2019.  We tried out in Mary Rigg Neighborhood Center in their after-school program to selected IPS school students.  For the first half of the class, we introduce the history, culture and fun fact of the topic.  On the second half of the class, we have an interactive game or activity that is related to the topic.  It was fun and kids learned a lot while having a lot of fun.  The program received feedback and we have been since then.  The topics covered so far:
  • Chopstick Culture & Challenge Game
  • Zodiac Culture & Coloring Game
  • Fan Culture, History, and DIY Handcrafts
  • Lantern History, Culture, and DIY Handcrafts
  • Chinese Characters & Calligraphy
  • Fortune Sticks & Game
  • Paper Cut Culture, History, and DIY Handcrafts
  • Chinese Culture from an American's Experience
  • The Story of Mulan
